Foster Youth Voice Month 2026: Driven by Experience

This October, Foster Youth Voice Month (FYVM) shines a spotlight on the perspectives and experiences of young people who have been impacted by foster care. Initiated and led by Selfless Love Foundation (SLF), this nationwide movement promotes meaningful youth engagement by ensuring young people are not only listened to but also actively involved in decisions that affect their futures.

With more than 360,000 children currently in foster care throughout the United States, amplifying youth voice remains more important than ever. SLF believes that young people with lived experience deserve more than awareness, they deserve a seat at the table. Their knowledge and perspectives play a vital role in shaping a child welfare system that respects and responds to the needs of those it serves.

As part of FYVM, SLF encourages youth to express the power of youth voice through its annual T-Shirt Design Contest. Entries are reviewed and selected by a panel of professionals and youth advocates. The winning artist receives both financial compensation and national recognition for their work.

This year’s contest winner is Cynthia, a gifted young artist from Virginia. Her butterfly-themed design, paired with a powerful message of resilience reflects the journey many youth experience in foster care. Cynthia’s artwork highlights change as a pathway to growth.

“Much like a butterfly goes through stages, my experiences have shaped me into the person I am today,” said Cynthia, FYVM T-Shirt Design Contest winner. “The butterfly represents overcoming challenges, embracing change, and using those experiences as motivation to move forward with purpose and strength.”

Cynthia’s winning artwork is featured on T-shirts generously sponsored by the Jockey Being Family Foundation and worn by youth across the country. They are a visible symbol of empowerment and reinforce the message that youth voices deserve to be heard.

More than 30 states are participating in FYVM, demonstrating the impact youth leadership is having on policies and practices across the country. The month is about more than recognition, it is an opportunity to drive change and ensure young people are actively involved in developing solutions.

A Testimony

Proverbs 11:14: “Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety” (ESV). When you spend most of your childhood in the Bible Belt as I did, it’s not unusual to have an adult in your life throw out this bible verse –

The Dignity of Risk

“Being in foster care felt like being incarcerated,” shared a young person with lived experience. Incarceration, the act of confining a person, is used for retribution, incapacitation, deterrence, and rehabilitation. Youth in foster care have not committed a crime so why do we limit their freedom to make decisions and take risks?

Supportive Adults are Suicide Prevention

Going into the foster care system at the age of 15 was a unique experience, to say the least. Like many Fosters, I did not have any supportive adults in my life who I was close to before entering the system.

The Power of Support

My journey to get where I am now was difficult as a former foster youth. I have faced many obstacles that, at the time, seemed impossible to overcome.
