Permanent connections refer to long-term relationships that provide a stable and nurturing environment for children and adolescents. These connections and relationships can strengthen over time with family members, friends, mentors, and other supportive adults who offer unconditional love, support, and a sense of belonging. Both permanent connections and supportive adults all share the common goal of providing children with a stable foundation to grow and thrive.

Family connections are one of the most critical types of permanent connections. Parents and guardians are typically the first and most important source of support for children and teenagers. It is also from parental involvement that children gain family connections. A stable and loving family environment can provide children with a sense of safety and security. Family connections can also provide children with a sense of cultural and historical identity, which is essential for their personal development and self-esteem.

In addition to family connections, supportive adults can have a profound impact on young people. Supportive adults are individuals, such as parents, guardians, teachers, or mentors, who provide care, guidance, and support to children and adolescents. These adults play a pivotal role in shaping a child’s development and well-being. Supportive adults can offer emotional support by showing empathy, understanding, and compassion. They can offer social support by providing children with positive role models and introducing them to new people, ideas, and experiences.

These individuals, such as teachers and coaches, can also inspire students to excel academically or athletically, and provide valuable guidance as they navigate life’s challenges. Teachers and coaches who are empathetic, patient, and understanding can help young people build resilience and confidence, while those who are critical or dismissive can have the opposite effect.

Lastly, mentors and role models are another vital source of support for young people. These individuals can provide guidance and wisdom based on their own experiences, as well as offer a caring and nonjudgmental ear to listen to the struggles and concerns of young people. Mentors and role models can also help young people expand their networks and expose them to new experiences and opportunities.

In conclusion, all children need support, guidance, and care to grow into healthy and successful adults. Permanent connections and supportive adults are the backbone of a child’s development and well-being. Children who have these types of relationships in their lives can have better mental health, academic achievement, and social connections. Permanent connections and supportive adults provide a sense of emotional, social, financial, and moral support that helps children face life’s challenges and grow into confident and competent adults.

Debunking the Myth: Young People Aging Out of Care Should Be Independent

Growing up is a challenging journey for any young person, but the path can be even more arduous for those in foster care. Despite our nation’s value on independence, research and experience indicate that the expectation of self-sufficiency for young people who age out of the foster care system is a myth at best and unhealthy at worst.

Belonging – Creating Community for Youth

“Foster care is an imperfect solution to an impossible problem.” Those words from Lived Experience Expert, Gaelin Elmore, resonated with me as I attended the 2022 Texas Child Care Administrators Conference. Gaelin spoke about the importance of building a sense of belonging to unlock the potential of youth involved in the foster care system. Living in survival mode, they have spent most of their lives not knowing what it feels like to be part of a family or community.
