To Me Adoption Means

For me adoption is just the next phase of life where you truly have the freedom to be whatever you want to be.

While this may seem exciting, there are many challenges that come with this transition. These challenges are nothing like the ones you have faced before. Being adopted is a whole different ball game. At first, you’re really excited that you’re out of foster care. But after everything is all said and done, there is no going back. There’s no, “I’ll ask my caseworker to move me to another placement,” or any of that because for one, where you are has turned from a non-relative placement into what most caseworkers call “your forever home.” And they’re correct, the home and family that has adopted you is yours forever. You can’t trade them in for another one. From that point on, every new experience, whether good or bad, they will be there with you. When you hit a bump in the road, you can’t give up no matter how bad you want to. You have to figure out a way to resolve the problem in a new way because the way that you’re used to solving problems is not going to cut it.

I’m not saying that it’s easy, because trust and believe me when I tell you that it’s hard. Each and every one of us has our own problems and ways of dealing with hard things. But at the end of the day, being adopted doesn’t mean that you have to forget everything, whether good or bad, about your past, because your past is what helped turn you into the person you are at this very moment in your life. Your past will always be a part of you, and it’s there to remind you how far you have come, and most importantly, how much you have overcome.
