Together, Selfless Love Foundation and Children’s Harbor are helping former foster youth bridge the gap from dependence to independence.
In the United States, over 28,000 foster youth “age out” every year. Nearly half of those kids end up homeless within the first 2 years. For this reason we partnered with Children’s Harbor, to form Brown’s Harbor. Brown’s Harbor is a supportive housing for former foster youth, providing the residents with beautiful, affordable apartments, on-site support and guidance, and most importantly, a vibrant community where they feel they belong. We provide our residents with educational workshops, leadership curriculums, and many other resources. At Brown’s Harbor we are fostering leaders!
Selfless Love Foundation helped me go to Cosmetology School and because of their support I started my own business, Worth Ave Hair – Hair Worthy of You. I’m thankful to have their support in accomplishing my dreams!” – Gaiola
“There are many things I love about Brown’s Harbor – but the motivation I receive from the staff, the opportunities that are provided, and the workshops we attend are what helps me achieve my goals.” – Stacy
“My favorite workshop was when stylist Elysze Held visited us. She taught us how to dress appropriately for job interviews, and how to have fun with our own
personal style. These skills helped me prepare for job interviews and dressing for success!” – Majony
“When I was 17, I was homeless for two months and still in high school. Then I found Brown’s Harbor and my life changed forever.” – Tyler
Brown’s Harbor Graduate, Kiensha
Upon aging out of foster care, Kiensha moved into Brown’s Harbor. There, she ended up adopted her four siblings who were still in foster care. While raising her siblings, Kiensha worked and continued to go to school. She received her degree in social work, graduated from Brown’s Harbor, and bought their family a first home! Kiensha is now working as a life coach to help other youth transition successfully from foster care.
Programs such as Dale Carnegie’s Leadership Training are provided to our Brown’s Harbor residents to help them develop vital skills in five key areas; financial, personal, community, education/vocation, and health.
Brown’s Boutique is a place where our Brown’s Harbor residents can have confidence “shopping” for clothing for everyday and business attire. We accept gently used clothing from our community partners and are grateful for everyone’s support in helping make this space a reality!
The Dream Tank provides our former foster youth the opportunity to present their dreams and aspirations to a panel of successful people and receive feedback and guidance on how to achieve their dreams.
Southern Glazer’s Wine & Spirit’s Bike Rally is one example of the way our community can get involved to support our Brown’s Harbor residents. We work with organizations and businesses to host team building exercises. This is a great way to support our mission while your team gets involved with a service project!
